To Control Costs, New Coalition Will Press Health Policy Agenda

State House News Service
November 30, 2010

Repealing the state's sales tax exemption on soda and candy will be a top priority for a new coalition of government and business leaders committed in the next session to passing a comprehensive public health bill that will begin to address a rise in chronic illnesses such as obesity.

With a building focus on Beacon Hill toward tackling skyrocketing healthcare costs, the newly formed Healthy People/Healthy Economy coalition announced Tuesday, Nov. 30, that it would make an aggressive push, including legislative changes, to prod Massachusetts residents to make better choices about diet, exercise, smoking, stress and safety...

The effort will be led by a partnership between the Boston Foundation and the New England Health Care Institute, chaired by Grogan, Valerie Fleishman, the executive director of NEHI, and Ranch Kimball, the former CEO of the Joslin Diabetes Center. The leadership team consists of 32 people from the public and private sectors, including Public Health Commissioner John Auerbach and James Roosevelt, the CEO of Tufts Health Plan.

After the launch of a coalition focused in improving public health in Massachusetts, Boston Foundation President Paul Grogan chats with Ranch Kimball (center), former CEO of the Joslin Diabetes Center and state economic secretary under Gov. Mitt Romney, and Dan O'Connell, who served as Gov. Deval Patrick's first economic secretary.
