ICU Telemonitoring Improves Outcomes, Saves Money

Remote monitoring of critically ill patients decreased mortality, shortened ICU stays and improved margins at both an academic and a community hospital, according to a recent study from the New England Healthcare Institute (NEHI) and the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC). These findings led the study authors to conclude that the technology should be implemented statewide to save more than 350 lives and $122 million annually.
“The results were much more positive than we anticipated,” said NEHI President Wendy Everett in Cambridge, Mass. “We knew this was an important technology and, potentially, a very valuable one.”
