Study Highlights Benefits of Tele-ICU Technology

A research and health policy organization has an idea for how to cope with a shortage of critical care practitioners in relation to the increasing number and severity of ICU patients in the U.S.
NEHI, a Massachusetts-based nonprofit, recently proposed addressing the staffing shortage through the use of tele-ICU, a telemedicine technology. Intensivists in a “command center” use tele-ICU to remotely monitor, consult and care for ICU patients in multiple and distant locations. The technology extends staff members’ reach and productivity by increasing the number of critical care patients they can manage.
