Waste has built up in the US healthcare system as a result of payment methods that reward more care rather than better care and a lack of focus on clinical outcomes, prevention and care coordination and management. Waste is estimated to represent nearly one third of total healthcare costs in the US, primarily from unwarranted care and a lack of preventive and coordinated care (The New England Healthcare Institute (NEHI) February 2008, Thomson Reuters October 2009, PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Health Research Institute, 2008).
