NEHI ANNOUNCES THE NICK LITTLEFIELD HEALTH POLICY FELLOWSHIP

Named Fellowship Honors a Legend in the Health Care Arena

BOSTON, MA (October 15, 2014) – NEHI (Network for Excellence in Health Innovation) has announced its first named fellowship: The Nick Littlefield Health Policy Fellowship. Named in honor of Nick Littlefield, the Fellowship was announced October 8 by Board Chair John Fallon, MD, at NEHI’s annual Innovators in Health Awards gala in Boston.

"There is no one more deserving of a named Fellowship in health policy than Nick Littlefield. Nick has devoted his career to helping shape health care in America," said John Fallon, MD, senior vice president and chief physician executive at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and NEHI Board Chair. "As staff director and chief counsel for Senator Edward Kennedy, Nick spearheaded landmark legislation on the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. Nick has worked to protect the rights of all Americans, helping countless people through important legislation and policy action."

Wendy Everett, ScD, NEHI CEO, said: "As a founding Board member of NEHI who helped move our policy work to national prominence, it is appropriate that NEHI’s first Fellowship recognize and honor Nick’s leadership, his strategic counsel and his enormous enthusiasm for our mission. For all he has done on behalf of improving health care, his enduring legacy of helping millions of Americans get access to care, his unselfish efforts to promote healthful national policies, and for his tireless work to help found, support and guide NEHI and speed innovation to patients, we are proud to establish the Nick Littlefield Health Policy Fellowship."

Although Littlefield was unable to attend the awards ceremony, Everett presented his wife, Jenny, with a plaque and certificate commemorating the occasion.

"I am extremely honored by this award and thank NEHI for this recognition," Littlefield said. "I hope that this fellowship helps people who believe in and practice public service to learn how best research practices can create policy change and speed innovation in health care. I look forward to seeing the results evidenced by the work that the fellows do and know that their contributions will improve people’s lives."

The fellowship will enable mid-career health policy professionals to learn applied research and straddle the worlds of research and policy, and how to speed innovation to patients through regulation and policy change.
