Leading Health Care Innovator Dr. Molly Joel Coye Joins NEHI as Social Entrepreneur in Residence
CAMBRIDGE, MA (June 1, 2015) – The Network for Excellence in Health Innovation (NEHI) is pleased to announce that Molly Joel Coye, MD, MPH, a leading national expert in health innovation and technology, joins the staff today. Dr. Coye brings many years of experience in public health, government, large hospital systems, insurance companies, academia and nonprofits to her new role as Social Entrepreneur in Residence. In this role, Dr. Coye will work to research and develop platforms for the rapid advancement of high-value innovations.
“We are so glad to have Dr. Coye join the NEHI team as Social Entrepreneur in Residence,” says Wendy Everett, ScD, NEHI CEO. “Changing healthcare through the adoption of valuable innovations is at the core of NEHI’s mission, and Dr. Coye has lived and breathed that mission for over thirty years.”
Dr. Coye’s work will be supported in part by a grant from The Commonwealth Fund. The grant funds build on the University of California at Los Angeles’ Global Lab for Innovation in Health (The Global Lab), the first comprehensive, interactive database of global innovations in healthcare delivery. Initially developed with funding from UCLA and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Global Lab finds, vets and disseminates high-value innovations with the capacity to radically reduce cost and expand access to care. Dr. Coye will work with NEHI staff and key stakeholders to create a methodology to “bundle” innovations that could produce significant savings in the care delivery system while keeping constant or improving the quality and access to care.
“There are many high-value innovations that could greatly expand access to health care and improve the affordability of care, yet remain stranded – largely ignored in practice,” Dr. Coye says. “Working with NEHI and The Commonwealth Fund, I hope to find new ways to accelerate the adoption of such innovations.”
Drs. Coye and Everett are also co-chairs of the National Healthcare Innovation Summit, the leading educational forum to explore cutting-edge innovations with demonstrated results that accelerate healthcare transformation. The summit is sponsored by HIMSS, AVIA and NEHI and will convene on June 15-17, 2015 in Chicago.
Dr. Coye comes to NEHI from UCLA Health where she served as Chief Innovation Officer for UCLA Health and Clinical Professor of Family Medicine. Dr. Coye was also the founder and CEO of the Health Technology Center (HealthTech), a non-profit education and research organization established in 2000 that became the premier forecasting organization for emerging technologies in health care. Dr. Coye has also served as Commissioner of Health for the State of New Jersey, Director of the California State Department of Health Services, and Head of the Division of Public Health Practice at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. Dr. Coye is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine, a member of the Board of Directors of Aetna, Prosetta Biosciences, BigWhiteWall, and Access Health International, and serves on several advisory boards of venture and private equity firms investing in health care information technology and services. Dr. Coye holds MD and MPH degrees from Johns Hopkins University and an MA in Chinese History from Stanford University, and is the author of two books on China.
Dr. Coye will be based in NEHI’s San Francisco office.
