NEHI's newest team member gives her thoughts on the biggest needs in health care and where she sees NEHI's work evolving
NEHI is thrilled to welcome our newest team member, Caroline Steinberg. Caroline will be serving as the Vice President of Programs and will help to drive our research and thought leadership efforts. Caroline comes to NEHI from the American Hospital Association where she oversaw policy research, trends analysis and data analytics to support AHA’s policy development and advocacy efforts. Prior to the AHA, Caroline was a vice president at The Lewin Group, where she spent nine years working with both public and private provider organizations to develop strategies to confront changes in the health care environment.
Why did you want to bring your research, policy, and project management experience to NEHI?
NEHI represents the ideal place to pursue my goal of fostering the Triple Aim: better health, better health care, and lower costs. While our health care system offers much that is unique and cutting edge relative to the rest of the world, it falls dramatically short on measures of access, health status, and cost. Addressing these shortcomings will require the type of multi-stakeholder engagement at which NEHI excels given the breadth and depth of its membership.
Where do you see opportunities to advance innovation in health care?
I believe there is huge potential to transform how care is paid for and delivered. Health care has not yet moved into the digital age. So much care can be delivered in the home and in other non-facility-based settings which will improve quality, satisfaction, and cost. We are also on the cusp of a molecular revolution which will allow therapies to be tailored to individual patients for cancer and other diseases. Moving from a fee-for-service to value-based payment system will create incentives for care to move in these directions.
Where do think NEHI’s collaborative approach to problem-solving and research is needed most in health care?
I believe a multi-stakeholder effort is needed to help make our health care system more sustainable. Currently all players have a stake in growing the health care pie so they can increase their own revenue. This mindset is not sustainable. All players will need to refocus their efforts on the triple aim—better health, better healthcare and lower costs—if we are to constrain the growth in health care costs. Focusing on cost lowering innovations, such as those that improve health and/or reduce emergency visits and hospitalizations can have a dramatic impact on downstream costs.
