NEHI's Response to Senator Alexander's White Paper on Preparing for the Next Pandemic

White paperBOSTON -- June 26, 2020

Today, NEHI submitted its comments on Sentator Alexander's White Paper on Preparing for the Next Pandemic. NEHI’s comments reflect its own views but were shaped by a gathering that included a group of its members and expert stakeholders who focused on recommendations 3.4 and 5.1 in the White Paper, as these squarely raise issues affecting the administration of vaccines now and in the future.

Our comments outline issues that must be addressed more comprehensively if the country is to deploy COVID-19 vaccines effectively-- whenever they become available. Those issues are substantial. Indeed, they echo points and questions raised by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce in a letter sent to Dr. Birx in May requesting answers about the Administration’s COVID-19 vaccine plan. We do not know if the Administration responded to the letter, but have heard that any response will not be made public. We are, therefore, more motivated than ever to mobilize a coherent planning effort for COVID-19 vaccination. We need your help to do so.

While we know you have many avenues for advocacy, a multi-stakeholder brief based on collective expertise and experience will be a powerful supplement to your own efforts. Moreover, a discussion representing multiple perspectives will likely yield new recommendations. If you can contribute funding to this effort, we would appreciate it and certainly acknowledge both your financial support and all the wisdom you can add. Thank you again to Pfizer and Johnson and Johnson for launching this.
